Very interesting post, Bunny. I've been discussing the same in the Spanish blogosphere. I don't have problems with any kind of tops or rankings, popularity or authority: they are useful if you know what they mean. Computers are limited and it's very difficult to program an algorithm that sorts by "quality", whathever it means.
Excellent post! Very good points on the difference between popularity and authority. You are pushing me to really think and discern the difference.
